AI Got Real This Year

AfroTech Conference 2025

I was fortunate to attend the AfroTech Conference this year — and the vibe was undeniable. Thousands of creators, technologists, and entrepreneurs showed up ready to give, receive, and build.

The AfroTECH Conference is the largest Black tech conference in the world. It provides an opportunity to connect with a global community of 20,000+ Black (and minority) tech innovators during a series of events filled with dynamic programming on emerging trends

Last year, AI was something to think about.
This year, it was the main character.

Almost every workshop and panel centered around AI — not just how to use it, but how to understand it. The two themes that stood out:

  1. How to use AI Agents effectively

  2. The Ethics of AI

💡The Takeaway

The consensus was clear: AI isn’t coming — it’s here.

And with that, there’s a new creative imperative: tell your story.
Not just from an African American perspective, but from your perspective.

The rapper, singer and songwriter Jidenna said, “We don’t see comics just because they’re funny. We see them because of their point of view.”
That line stuck with me — because the same is true for creators, entrepreneurs, and anyone building digital hustles right now.

The tools are powerful. But the story — your lens — is the differentiator.

Microsoft Copilot made a strong appearance — it’s Microsoft’s built-in AI tool that’s embedding itself directly into workflow apps.

Another standout was Amplitude, a platform that helps teams analyze user behavior to drive smarter growth. It’s a perfect example of how storytelling and data aren’t opposites — they’re teammates.

The keynote speaker, Stacey Abrams drove the message home:

…is not only a superpower, it's a knowledge base, and that AI is the tool that we are using in this moment to aggregate and deploy that knowledge. And what I would love for folks to understand is that AI is a tool. And like any tool, it can be used to build or destroy. And it is up to us to decide what we are going to do with it.

That idea shifted the tone of the whole week. AfroTech wasn’t just about what’s next in tech — it was about who gets to shape it.

🧭 Why It Matters for You (and for Upcode)

At Upcode, we talk about digital hustles that actually work — systems, tools, and creative leverage.

AfroTech reminded me that while AI can multiply output, your perspective multiplies impact.
Whether you’re producing music, launching a product, or building your brand — it’s not just about automation. It’s about authorship.

So as AI keeps evolving, the move is simple:
Don’t be afraid to learn it and tell your stories.

🧰 This Week’s Thought

AI doesn’t replace creativity.
It reveals who’s been creative all along.

Upcode is a newsletter about digital hustles that actually work — real tools, systems, and creative strategy for people building something of their own.
If this hit home, share it with a friend who’s building too.
